Nail Treatment
FACTS
On this page you will find some of the
common questions we hear about the care and treatment of
toenail fungus. If you have additional questions or didn’t
get your answer below, please call us to set up an appointment.
During your visit, one of our physicians will answer any
questions you may have regarding bunions and feet.
Is the procedure painful?
No. The procedure does not
create any disability.
Does insurance pay for the laser treatment?
No. This procedure is considered
cosmetic and therefore it is not covered by insurance.
What are the financial arrangements?
Payment in full is required
before the treatment is administered. Cash, checks, money
orders,
or credit cards are accepted. You may also use
your medical IRA, Health Savings or Flexible Spending Account.
Our office, in special situations, can help you find financing.
How much time is involved with the procedure?
The laser treatment will take
approximately 30-45 minutes. There will be a follow-up
visit at
four months and at six months to evaluate the
progress. These visits will take fifteen minutes. There
is no charge for those follow up visits.
Will I have to take time away from work after the procedure?
No. The procedure does not create any disability.
When will I see results?
The toenail is slow growing,
taking almost 12 months to replace itself. Consequently,
results will not be seen for several months.
Does the treatment always
work?
No. With all fungal nail
treatments there may be some failures. Oral medication
taken for
3 months has shown to have a 40% failure rate
with potential side effects whereas the laser treatment
has shown to have a 20% failure rate with no side effects.
The fungus is killed after one treatment, but there is
a chance of reinfection because the fungus is present everywhere
in the environment.
Is there anything that I
can do to help the success of the procedure?
Yes. Topical antifungal
application can help treat the problem as well as prevent
recurrence.
It is further recommended to avoid walking
barefooted in public showers, or bathing areas. Additionally,
it is recommended to sanitize the inside of your shoes
to eliminate fungal spores which can cause a reinfection.
Is this treatment available
in all doctor’s offices?
No. Special
training, equipment, and certification is required. Therefore,
the procedure can
only be
performed under those circumstances, and it is not available
in all offices.
